Basil Barton Blanchard III

Bart Blanchard (Basil Barton Blanchard III) passed away on March 20, 2018. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 13, 1940. While he resided in Denver, Colorado since 2009, Bart was a proud New Englander since birth.Bart is survived, and will be missed dearly, by his wife of nearly 50 years, June (Mowbray) Blanchard and his daughter Brenna Campbell, son-in-law David Campbell (Round Rock, TX) and their five children; Timothy, Ruth, Priscilla, Mary and Phoebe; daughter Courtney O’Shea and son-in-law, Sean O’Shea (Centennial, CO) and their four children Molly, Finn, Tatum and Maiti. He was the oldest of his four surviving siblings, Albert Blanchard, Maryl Blanchard, Joyce Stanton and Sharon Magnifico.Bart graduated from the Boston Latin School in 1958 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Columbia University (New York) in 1963. He worked as a civil engineer for many years in Connecticut and New York, retiring from the City of Boston as chief building inspector. Over the years, Bart’s family has made residence in Setauket, NY and New Canaan, CT.Bart was involved in sports his whole life; playing football for Columbia University, as well as semi-professional football with the Boston Chippewas. He was a die-hard fan of the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox, and he loved coaching Pop Warner football in Connecticut.In 2009, Bart and June moved to Denver, Colorado, where he enjoyed his time reading, brewing beer, baking bread, playing cribbage, curling and sharing wisdom around the dining room table with his grandchildren. For many years, Bart and his family spent summer vacations on Cape Cod making wonderful memories.We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Dad during his 77 years, among them: how to make a delicious loaf of bread, how to “snap a line” to pour a straight foundation, how to gather the right amount of treasures from the town dump to build the most fantastic fort, and how to drive a stick shift in a VW bug, on a hill. More importantly, though, he taught his family to be lifelong learners, how to listen more than we speak and how to persevere and remain strong under adversity.We will be celebrating his life, Saturday, March 31st, in a private family gathering in Colorado.
