Monroe William Shumate (December 15, 1952 – October 1, 2023)

A Legacy of Brilliance, Generosity, and Love

Monroe William Shumate was born December 15th, 1952, in Charleston, WV. Monroe's journey was marked by dedication, love, and exceptional brilliance. Though his passing leaves a void for us all, his legacy of warmth and achievement remains. A pioneering materials science engineer, Monroe garnered 18 patents over the course of his career. These innovations, born from his career-long tenure at Johns Manville, have left an indelible mark on the industry. Despite such professional heights, Monroe's heart always remained firmly rooted with his family.

To his children, Mike, an attorney in Fort Collins, CO, and Patti, a doctor in Tucson, AZ, Monroe was more than a father; he was a guide, mentor, and steadfast friend. Mike and Patti’s achievements stand as a testament to the love and values Monroe instilled in them.Monroe's love for his four grandchildren, Mason, Violet, Lewis-Monroe, and Harris, was profound and ever-present. The moments he shared with them were always special to him. He cherished the friendship and quality time spent with his son-in-law, Luke, and his daughter-in-law, Maggie.

In addition to his children and mother, Monroe is survived by his loving brothers, Mack, David, and Loren Shumate. Their bonds were filled with shared moments, laughter, and mutual support. Their brotherhood was a testament to the genuine camaraderie and brotherly love they held for each other, creating cherished memories.Monroe’s bond with his mother, Helen Shumate, was one of profound love, closeness, and warmth. The countless hours they spent together highlighted their special bond, a heartwarming testament to the timeless connection between mother and son, and Monroe’s selfless dedication to his loved ones. Monroe is preceded in death by his father, Mack Shumate.Monroe also found joy and relaxation in skiing with his family, with many happy memories of time spent as a family in Keystone, CO. Monroe is survived by Patricia Leonard of Centennial, CO, mother to Mike and Patti.

The denizens of Cave Creek and Scottsdale’s local pubs will remember the cheerful man who, accompanied by his loving companion, Cathy Byrne, would regale friends and strangers alike with stories and jokes. Monroe made everyone he met feel celebrated, cherished, and special.Holidays at the Shumate household, particularly Thanksgiving and Christmas, were occasions of joy, laughter, and togetherness. Monroe was the heart and soul of these celebrations and always made everyone feel welcome with a cold beer and heaping plate of lasagna.

In his passing, we are reminded of both the impermanence of life, and the everlasting impact one man can make on so many lives. Monroe was not just an exceptional engineer and father, but a beacon of kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity. His spirit, his values, and his love will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we bid him farewell, we take solace in the teachings of our faith, confident that Monroe now rests in the loving embrace of our Lord. His spirit, his values, and his love a guiding light on our path towards the heavenly Father. Rest in eternal peace with Christ, Monroe. Your legacy will live on forever.
